Rebecca Butler is a passionate communications professional. Her passion lies at the intersection of education, law, policy, and communication. She believes that when people have the tools and knowledge they need, they’re empowered to fully participate in their communities. In her work, she strives to communicate clearly, collaborate intentionally, and help make learning and information more accessible for everyone.
Butler holds a master’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin in Journalism and media. She focused her studies on constitutional law and press freedom. Her independent study course, supervised by Dr. Anita Varma, explores where the line falls between appropriate independence and excessive autonomy for journalists.
During her graduate studies, she also honed her journalism skills by publishing several stories for Reporting Texas, refined her photojournalism skills and learned R programming language to clean and analyze data. Butler served as a teaching assistant to Professor Rosental Alves in two classes: Reporting Latin America (Fall 2025) and Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Spring & Fall 2025).
Previously, Butler taught journalism and English at Hempstead High School in Hempstead, Texas. While teaching, she sponsored yearbook club, social media club and the senior class. She collaborated with Hempstead ISD’s Chief Communications Officer during the 2023-2024 school year to kickstart and recruit students for the Bobcat PR Squad Internship program; this program allowed students to polish their skills and gain practical experience in the field before college, while also promoting the school’s brand, story, and mission.
Butler graduated cum laude from Texas State University in May of 2021 with a Bachelor’s of Science in mass communication and journalism and a minor in English. She was a published writer in The University Star, Texas State’s campus newspaper, in the spring of 2020.
